Upon the Dedication of a Stolperstein
by Jonathan Blume

I buried my beloved in the ground, And covered there the earth with finest marble, And carved my loved one’s name upon the stone. And when, at least each year, I come to visit, I place upon the monument a stone. What is this custom? Why should stones be left? The truth I hardly know, but I can guess. In fifteen minutes, after I’ll have left, The stone is all my loved one will have left. That’s all that’s left, for those of life bereft. As sad as this may sound, the truth is sadder. My loved one, snatched, had never grave nor funeral. No resting place is there which I could visit. A proper rest is hardly that, now, is it? And now, for one so lost and so alone, I’ve picked a place, and brought to it a stone. And though there’s now a place where I can visit, I visit, not my loved one, but a stone. And like my loved one, I too am alone. These stones, if they could speak, what would they tell us? Forever they’d remind us of our lost, And those we cannot even bring a stone.
